PRESS PLAY - Stefn Sylvester Anyatonwu

Here we are,
a cluster of aggrieved tribes
lodged around Niger's bank.
By dismal unfazed
I see a man amazed
like a tout enraged,
stammering and cursing,
kicking, threatening, angry...
The wind of fear and suspicion
fanning the embers of burning misery.
Never were one ab initio,
Haves to haves-not, unequal ratio.
We rage, riot and scream No!
Press play!
We pause,
We rewind
In tear soaked eyes, we smile
and dance to the piper's tune
forgetting our ruin
frolicking in our doom
from Bonny to Kano;
This is I and you.

We beckon on the full
for water, shelter - a little food.
Chewing... in sweet anguish
sour left-overs.
We are the left-overs!
tossed over the dung hill.
Denied our treasured belongings-
Family, charity, unity.
Our common prayers -
Hope for the future,
coal to battle General Cold's torture.
A big bowl of expired pasture.
Eew! Swallow your lying scriptures!
Our smiles? Mere emoticons...
Press play!
We pause,
We rewind
In tear soaked eyes, we smile
and dance to the piper's tune
forgetting our ruin
frolicking in our doom
from Bonny to Kano;
This is I and you.

Grin white grin
of cosmetic enthusiasm.
Hijab lassies exploding!
Clueless legacies.
Vote for change!
But... the key to the cage,
isn't it missing?
Power brokers busy running
Writers writing
Readers reading
Wailers wailing...
On board a bug jet of missing budget.
Is it Fool's Day?
Are calendars lying too?
Maka Chukwu, I swear I'm wary of all this.
Press play!
We pause,
We rewind
In tear soaked eyes, we smile
and dance to the piper's tune
forgetting our ruin
frolicking in our doom
The emancipator is not Kanu;
It is I and you.
